The Swedes are fairly informal; however, they do separate “public” from “private”, so don’t be offended if they don’t inquire about your family or hobbies. These are not topics you should avoid at all costs, but it is a good idea to try and be sensitive to your partner in conversation.
- Weather is considered a “safe” topic for small talk.
- It is not considered good practice to criticize a person in public, especially if they are not present.
- Swedes appreciate it when their guests exhibit knowledge of the difference between Swedish and other Nordic cultures. Showing knowledge in things Swedish, especially aspects that distinguish the Swedes from other Scandinavians would be greatly appreciated.
